The Ministry of Health of Ukraine has recorded 57,301 cases on measles from December 28, 2018 to August 16, 2019. This includes 27,039 adults and 30,262 children. Out of those cases, 18 people have died as a result of contracting the disease.
The Ministry says that rates typically drop during the summer when children are not in school and concentrated in large numbers. They except to see an increase once school resumes in September.
Vaccines are the most effective deterrent against measles and the Ministry strongly advises that everyone who can receive the vaccine should do so. Children under one year old and people with suppressed immune systems are unable to be vaccinated and are at increased risk of contracting the disease.
The Ministry offers the vaccine for free for everyone. The age restriction that was in place for the free vaccines has been canceled so anyone can take advantage of the free program.
