September 8, 2019 marks the 75th anniversary of the beginning of the deportation of Ukrainians from the Lemkivshchyna, Nadsiannia, Kholmshchyna, South Pidlashchia, Liubachyvshchyna and Western Boikivshchyna which was carried out from 1944 to 1951.
The deportation of Ukrainians from the territories where they had lived for centuries occurred as a result of the agreement between the Ukrainian Soviet Socialist Republic and the Polish National Liberation Committee on the removal of the Ukrainian population from Poland and Polish citizens from the territory of the Ukrainian SSR.
The action was planned as voluntary, but did not find a great favor among Ukrainians. In response, the Polish government eliminated Ukrainian schools, oppressed public life, discriminated against Ukrainians during agrarian reforms and imposed excessive taxes.
After that, the forced exile began. In total, during 1944-1946, according to official data, 482,800 people were deported from Poland to the territory of the Ukrainian SSR. The real number of transferred Ukrainians could be far greater. Harassment and deportations continued until 1951.
A series of memorial events is scheduled to be held in Kyiv on September 9, 2019 according to the Ukrainian Institute of National Remembrance.
The Kyiv National Taras Shevchenko University will host a round table discussion. The exhibition ‘Expulsion’ commemorating the 75th anniversary of the start of the deportation of Ukrainians from Lemkovschina, Lyubachivschina, Nadsyanynya, Kholmshchina, South Podlasie and Western Boykovschina will also be opened there.
A meeting, requiem and a prayer service to victims of the famine and political repressions is to take place near the Memorial Cross.
A commemorative meeting with the participation of Ukrainian officials, clergy, media and delegations of civil organizations will be held in the Ivan Franko National Academic Drama Theater as well.
