Archaeologists found the remains of Fort Alexander in Zaporizhzhia.
Fort Alexander had been erected in 1770 to defend against the Tatars. It’s thought that the presence of the fort eventually led to the foundation of the modern city of Zaporizhzhia.
“Excavations were carried out in the area adjacent to the Zaporizhzhia Gymnasium #2 and were held as part of the Program for the Protection of Historic and Cultural Monuments in Zaporizhzhia, adopted in 2018,” Mayor Volodymyr Buriak wrote on Facebook.
Among the discoveries made were the remains of earthen ramparts and moats from St. John’s citadel, which had served as a part of Fort Alexander, the City Council said.
Archeologists had been searching for fort’s remains for many years prior to the discovery.
