Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky along with representatives from the Council of the Federation of Jewish Communities of Ukraine kindled the lamps at the Menorah – a monument to the executed Jews.

In a speech at the site of the massacre, Israeli Ambassador to Ukraine Joel Lion spoke of the importance of Yom Kippur, which in Judaism is the holiest day of the year, whose central themes are atonement and repentance. He said that Jews must fight antisemitism wherever they find it.

Traditionally, Jews observe Yom Kippur – the Day of Atonement – with an approximate 25-hour period of fasting and prayer- spending much of the day in the synagogue.
