Dec. 15 – Final Break From Russian Orthodox Church
The Ukrainian synod will meet at Kyiv's St Sophia Cathedral in order to create the country's independent church and select its leader
Ukraine will finalize its break from the Russian Orthodox Church on Dec. 15th.
The Ukrainian synod will meet at Kyiv’s St Sophia’s Cathedral in order to create the country’s independent church and select its leader.
They will also approve the church’s statute.
“For those who want to be in unity with the Russian church, I, as the President and the guarantor of the Constitution, I guarantee this right. But we are stressing that the Moscow Patriarchate will not dictate the rules. It will not claim who is canonical and who isn’t. The believers will choose themselves what church to attend. Nobody will force anyone to do anything. I would like to stress that we will not allow the Kremlin to ignite an inter-religious conflict,” Poroshenko said.
