Ukraine honored the memory of the fallen defenders of the Donetsk Airport today.

An event in Kyiv, organized by the Defense Ministry was attended by the families of the fallen soldiers, Ukrainian President Petro Poroshenko, the leadership of the defense department, the General Staff of the Armed Forces of Ukraine, members of the public, soldiers of the Kiev garrison, cadets and lyceum students of military schools.

The defenders of the Donetsk Airport came to be known as “cyborgs” for their seemingly inhuman ability to fend off constant attacks by Russian-backed militant forces in close quarters with little sleep or support.

“Pain and gratitude encourage us to remember all those who gave their lives for the freedom and independence of Ukraine. Legends are written about these people, books have been written, films have been made. Bow to you, mothers and fathers, brothers and sisters, daughters and sons of cyborgs,” Poroshenko said.

Poroshenko said that some day Ukrainians will peacefully gather on the runway of the Donetsk airport and honor the soldiers’ memory there. He said that above that airport, a Ukrainian flag will fly.

The relatives of the fallen soldiers sang patriotic songs.
