Ukrainian State Commissioner on Human Rights Liudmyla Denisova states that the case of Vitaliy Markiv, who was convicted of the murder of Italian photographer and journalist Andrea Rockelli and sentenced to 24 years of imprisonment, is of political importance.

Markiv is being kept in the Opera Correctional Facility in Milan, “where people who have committed particularly serious crimes are being punished,” Denisova said.
“The case is based only on the testimony of a single witness — a French journalist. However, no expert investigations were conducted,” Denisova wrote on her Facebook page.
According to Denisova, official documents of the Italian inquiry are mistaken in saying that Markiv was a member of the paramilitary structures. In fact, the Ukrainian citizen was in the service of the National Guard of Ukraine, she writes.
Denisova urged the Ukrainian authorities to determine the status of Markiv.
She also addressed Ukrainian diaspora, Italian citizens and the Italian media to share impartial information about the circumstances of Rockelli’s death.
She also appealed to the Council of Europe Commissioner for Human Rights, Mijatovic, and the international community for assistance in getting Markiv proper justice.
