On Nov. 15, an “empty chairs” action will take place in support of Ukrainian political prisoners held in Russia and Crimea, PEN Ukraine wrote on Facebook.
The event will take place at 2 p.m. on Mykhailivska Square. It is organized by PEN Ukraine and the Center for Civil Liberties.
From the late 1980s on the initiative of PEN International, “an empty chair symbolizes an author who can not be present at a particular event because of imprisonment, detention, disappearance, threatening of life or murder.”
According to the organization, Nov. 15 is considered the Day of the Convicted Writer.
In Ukraine, the day is devoted to all Ukrainian political prisoners detained in illegally annexed Crimea, Russia, and occupied Donbas.
Various human rights activists, politicians and diplomats will be participating in the campaign.
