Famous Ukrainian Poet and Writer Lina Kostenko Сelebrates 89th Birthday

Lina Kostenko was born on March 19, 1930, in the city of Rzhyshchev, Kyiv Region. The parents of the future poet were teachers and have installed high moral, ethical and aesthetic patterns for the child to follow, presented inspiring literary, folk and historical models. He father, Vasyl Kostenko was a polyglot of unique genius, (he knew 12 languages), a teacher who could, if appropriate, teach any school subject at the highest level.
As a schoolgirl, she began attending a literary studio organized by the staff of Dnipro Magazine, edited by Andriy Malyshko. In the postwar years, Lina began attending a literary studio at the Union of Writers of Ukraine.
Lina Kostenko is the author of over 15 poetry collections (Sails, Wandering of the Heart, On the Shore of the Eternal River, The Garden of Unthawed Sculptures, Heraclitus’ River) and a novel The Notes of the Ukrainian Madman. She was awarded the State Shevchenko Prize for the historical poetic novel Marusya Churai.
Lina Kostenko is an honorary professor at the Kyiv-Mohyla Academy, an honorary doctorate at Lviv and Chernivtsi Universities.
President of Ukraine Petro Poroshenko congratulated the famous Ukrainian writer, poet, and public figure Lina Kostenko on her birthday.
“Without a doubt, her word is ‘hard steel.’ Her poetry is frank and sincere. Her talent is exceptional and complex. Today, our incomparable Lina Kostenko celebrates her birthday. Many years to come, Lina Vasylivna,” he wrote on Facebook.
