Mark Feygin, the public defender of Ukrinform correspondent Roman Sushchenko, who is illegally imprisoned in the Russian Federation, believes that the tactics of negotiations on the release of Ukrainian political prisoners should be changed.

“Moscow essentially ceases to pay attention to its image and the humanitarian issues. Therefore, it is necessary to change the tactics of negotiations. The parties negotiating with the Kremlin need to reflect less and raise the issue in a clearer manner. They should openly, persistently and outspokenly offer the options for exchange and use the mediators. At this particular moment, only Donald Trump could become such a mediator,” Feygin said in an interview with Ukrinform.

The US President is accused for having questionable links with the Russians, so Trump can try to solve the problems of jailed correspondent Sushchenko and the captured Ukrainian Navy soldiers in an effort to prove the contrary, Feygin explained.

“Actually, Carter and Reagan also released the Soviet dissidents. There is nothing new here, the logic is historical. The problem of Ukrainian political prisoners is not a problem of bilateral relations between Russia and Ukraine, it’s a global problem,” the public defender summed up.

Ukrinform’s Paris-based correspondent Roman Sushchenko was illegally detained on September 30, 2016 in Moscow, where he arrived on a private trip. On October 7, 2016, he was charged with “espionage.” On June 4, 2018, the Moscow City Court sentenced Sushchenko to 12 years in a high-security penal colony. The Supreme Court of Russia upheld the verdict on September 12, 2018. In November, Sushchenko was transferred to Penal Colony No. 11 of the Russian Federal Penitentiary Service directorate for the Kirov region where he is currently being  held.
