The Republican party, the party of United States President Donald Trump has lost its majority in the House of Representatives following midterm elections in the U.S.
Democrats rode a wave of dissatisfaction with Trump, allowing them to take control of 26 new seats in the House and giving them the opportunity to block Trump’s agenda and subpoena power to investigate the Trump administration.
An array of candidates, many of them women, first-time contenders or both were elected into the House.
However, Republicans did slightly expand their majority in the equally powerful Senate, taking two seats there.
The Democrats also gained seven governorships.
Races throughout the country were often deeply divisive.
