Ukraine expresses strong protest against the decision of the Russian Prosecutor General’s Office to recognize as “unwelcome” the activities of the Ukrainian World Congress (UWC) and calls on the world community to increase diplomatic pressure on the Kremlin.
This according to a statement released by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs.
“The Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Ukraine expresses strong protest against the decision by the Russian Prosecutor General’s Office to declare ‘unwelcome’ activities of the Ukrainian World Congress. This decision once again demonstrated the immutability of Russia’s repressive policies aimed at eliminating the civic organizations of the Ukrainian minority in the territory of the Russian Federation,” reads the statement.
According to the Ukrainian Ministry of Foreign Affairs, the work of the Ukrainian World Congress is aimed at supporting Ukrainian identity, assisting in the rehabilitation of Ukrainian wounded soldiers and civilians suffering from Russian armed aggression against Ukraine, implementing educational programs and Ukrainian schooling outside Ukraine, and preserving the national memory about victims of the Holodomor in Ukraine in 1932-1933.
The Ukrainian Ministry of Foreign Affairs has also assured that Ukraine is ready to take all steps in response to this shameful decision of the aggressor state and calls on the international community to consider the decision by the Russian Prosecutor General’s Office as another compelling violation of fundamental human rights, including the rights of the Ukrainian minority in Russia, and to strengthen diplomatic pressure on the Kremlin.
The Ukrainian World Congress is a non-profit and non-partisan association coordinated by Ukrainian civic organizations in the Ukrainian diaspora. It represents 20 million Ukrainians in 133 countries. One of the largest Ukrainian diaspora groups is in Russia.
