Guests of the forum in Kaniv laid flowers at the monument to the iconic Ukrainian poet Taras Shevchenko, who is buried in this town. Among them was the first president of independent Ukraine Leonid Kravchuk. He and other speakers at discussion panels talked about the challenges that the future holds for Ukraine in the areas of defence, education, economy, environment and others.

“We should think about what kind of Ukraine we want to see in five, ten, 15 or 50 years. And then we can reach this goalpost. If there’s no goalpost to aim for, there’ll be no success,” forum organizer Natalia Zabolotna said.

The ID Awards ceremony concluded the opening day of the forum. Last year, this award for contribution into humanitarian and cultural development of Ukraine was bestowed upon Ukrainian director, activist and political prisoner of the Kremlin, Oleh Sentsov. This year the statue was posthumously awarded to a young politician and anti-corruption activist Kateryna Handziuk. She died last year after a group of attackers poured acid into her face.

“I want to award this prize to Kateryna and to honour her memory here in Kaniv. And let this also be an award condemning violence against women,” journalist Anna Nemtsova said.
