Jewish New Year Celebrations Begin in Uman

Hasidic Jews from all over the world come to Uman, to the grave of Tzadik Nachman - the founder of Bratslav (Breslov) Hasidism

The celebration of the Jewish New Year, Rosh Hashanah, starts today (Sep. 29). On the Jewish calendar, today is the first day of the 5,780th year.

The holiday will last from this evening until Tuesday.

Every year in Ukraine, thousands of Hasidic Jews them come from all over the world to Uman to the grave of Tzadik Nachman – the founder of Bratslav (Breslov) Hasidism.

This year some 40,000 pilgrims from all over the world, but especially Israel have arrived in Ukraine for the Rosh Hashanah celebration.

A detachment of Israeli police also arrived in Uman to help ensure order during the celebrations.
