Tsurenko to Play in Finals
Ukraine's Lesia Tsurenko defeated Japan's Naomi Osaka
Ukrainian tennis player Lesia Tsurenko will go on to the finals of the WTA Premier tournament in the Australian city of Brisbane.
In two sets, Tsurenko outscored Japanese champion Naomi Osaka with 2:0 (6:2, 6:4) over an hour and five minutes, putting her in the finals.
This is Tsurenko’s second victory over a rival ranked in the top five. During the U.S. Open-2018, she beat Carolyn Wozniacki, who at that time was second in the WTA ranking.
This will be Tsurenko’s first time making it to the finals of the Premier tournament series. A victory would raise her to the 23rd position in the world tennis ranking, which would be a new personal record.
Tsurenko’s rival in the final in Brisbane will be determined by a match between Donna Vekic (Croatia, WTA 34) and Carolina Plishkova (Czech Republic, WTA 8).
The prize is $1 million, Channel 24 reported.
