“We are looking at Russia from two sides, and that is why we talked a lot about cooperation with Russia, as well as the problems with Russia, including Ukraine and the fact that Japan still does not have a peace treaty,” Merkel said at a joint press conference, a Ukrinform correspondent reported.
Merkel assured Abe that she supported all the efforts of the Japanese authorities, particularly the actions of Abe that were recently demonstrated in Moscow in order to achieve a peace treaty between Japan and the Russian Federation. After World War II, Japan and the Soviet Union never signed a peace treaty, a situation that still stands to this day with Russian having assumed most of the responsibilities of the Soviet Union after the country collapsed in 1991.
