Midterm Elections Start In US

The results could either further empower U.S. President Donald Trump or be a roadblock to his legislative agenda

As American voters prepare to go to the polls on Tuesday, the election will widely be seen as a verdict on the presidency of Donald Trump.

Should Republicans maintain control of the House and the Senate it will give the president the power he needs to get his legislative goals passed. If Democrats take either branch of Congress it will make it more difficult for Trump to achieve his legislative agenda.

Both the Republicans and the Democrats are pushing hard to win posts in national and state government. Some political analysts do not expect huge gains by the Democrats in the House of Representatives. Despite this, Republicans are still campaigning hard. President Trump has scheduled multiple rallies to energize the Republican base. The Democrats are also pulling out the stops with celebrities like Oprah Winfrey hitting the stump for candidates.

Voters in the country’s capital shared their thoughts on the upcoming election.

“Honestly I don’t really know. I think there I think if I could see it going either way. And I think that Kavanaugh thing could really polarize people like on the Republican side to go out there and say you know they don’t want to have this happen again,” financial advisor and Maryland voter David Butler said.

The Democrats are hopeful for a strong turnout by women, minorities and young voters.

“It’s crucial for young people as well as women to get out to vote because we know that’s how we got in this mess in the first place by not voting,” a floral designer and small business owner Stacey Lee Banks said. “I think I feel kinda hopeless a little hopeless or I feel a little bit of despair because I feel like we, even know where we will vote a certain way. I don’t know if the other parts of the country are feeling the same way.

If the Republicans maintain control of the House, it will further strengthen their control on policy and the future of the country.

However, if the Democrats take the House, there could be serious negative implications for the White House. The Democrats would most likely expand investigations into the Trump administration, including Russian collusion in the 2016 election.

This election will reveal what Americans want for the near future and could be a barometer for the upcoming presidential election in 2020.
