On July 13, 2019, Ukrainian filmmaker Oleh Sentsov will turn 43. This will be the sixth birthday in Russian prison having been convicted on groundless charges. Sentsov was arrested in Crimea in May 2014 for allegedly “plotting terrorist acts” following Russia’s illegal annexation of the Ukrainian territory where he lived.
On his birthday, activists plan to hold a Night with Oleh Sentsov in support of the political prisoner, encouraging others to join the world solidarity day for Sentsov.
Starting from 8:00pm Kyiv time until late at night, volunteers will read excerpts from Sentsov’s texts, listen to music written in devotion to political prisoners, and collect letters that will be sent to Sentsov. The night will continue with watching documentaries.
“Relatives of political prisoners, famous writers and performers, human rights and other activists will come together to once again to remember the imprisoned Ukrainian film director, who turns 43 on this day,” organizers wrote in the description of the Facebook event page.
The day before Sentsov’s birthday, human rights activists once again will turn to EU leaders. Activists will urge EU leaders to appoint a representative for the occupied Ukrainian territories of Crimea and Donbas, create permanent monitoring of political trials, and send independent missions for medical supervision.
