The Parliament of Kazakhstan on Wednesday approved an amendment to the country’s constitution, which makes possible the renaming of the capital Astana to Nursultan, Radio Svoboda reported. Now the document must be signed by the president.
President of Kazakhstan Nursultan Nazarbayev said in an address to the nation that he had resigned his powers as the head of state. The chairman of the Senate, Kasym-Zhomart Tokayev assumed the position of the acting president of the country.
The new acting President said that the capital of Kazakhstan should now be called Nursultan, and that Nazarbayev will remain “the only and lifelong” national leader.
