Numbers – the play by Ukrainian imprisoned stage and film director Oleh Sentsov will be performed twice on the stage of the Dovzhenko center on March 31, producer Hanna Pelenchuk told Ukrinform.
“The show will take place at ‘Scene 6 in Dovzhenko Center. The start will at 19:00. A part of the money raised will go to Oleh Sentsov’s family,” the article reported.
Numbers is not just a dystopia, but a prophetic piece with the plot directly related to the author’s faith. The story tells about a society that functions in a limited and abandoned world, where it’s every person for themself. The action takes place in an old circus, whose purpose is forgotten, it exists only because of inertia. Characters symbolically reflect the reality in a Russian prison. Each one is assigned a number.
The premiere of Numbers took place on December 7, 2018, in the Dovzhenko Center. The director, Tamara Trunova, works at the Academic Drama and Comedy Theater on the left bank of the Dnipro. The production is being performed by the company 435 FILMS with the support of the Ukrainian Cultural Foundation.
Oleh Sentsov was convicted in Russia for 20 years imprisonment on trumped-up charges: preparing an alleged terrorist attack in the illegally annexed Crimea. In 2018, the director went on a hunger strike for 145 days, demanding the release of all Ukrainian political prisoners.
Well-known world leaders of culture and art, as well as the United Nations, the United States and the European Union, have called for the release of the director. In 2018, Oleh Sentsov was awarded the Sakharov Human Rights Prize.
