The percentage of women police officers in Ukraine has increased rapidly from 5 percent to 25 percent

Big efforts have been made to address the gender equality issue in Ukraine. One area that has seen some success is the police force. The number of women police officers has grown since Ukraine starting reforming its police force.

The percentage of female patrol officers has grown from 5 percent to 25 percent, Iryna Zelena, the Deputy Chief of the Patrol Police Academy for the Ukrainian National Police said at the Ukraine Reform Conference in Toronto, Canada.

“We have a lot of support. We have support in the National Police, in our Ministry, in the society. So we are really needed,” Zelena said.

The Women’s Association of the National Police is providing leadership training for policewomen. The organization was founded a year ago but now has some 200 members.

“We have the Ukrainian Association of women in law enforcement [agencies]. This is the first association [of a kind], which provides gender equality and equal opportunities for men and women in law enforcement [agencies],” Zelena said.
