Poroshenko Awards Hero of Ukraine Title to Filaret
It is the highest national award in the country

Ukrainian President Petro Poroshenko has conferred the title of “Hero Of Ukraine,” the highest national award, to Patriarch Filaret, Poroshenko wrote on his Facebook page.
The president praised Filaret’s contribution to the creation of an independent Orthodox Church of Ukraine.
“The extent to which Patriarch Filaret’s contribution to the struggle for his own local church cannot be measured and is not yet invented. He was, is and remains the spiritual leader of the Ukrainian church, the spiritual leader of the Ukrainian people. That is why, I decided to assign him the title of ‘Hero of Ukraine,'” Poroshenko said.
The title is being awarded to Filaret for his outstanding historical role in the formation of the independent Orthodox Church of Ukraine, activities aimed at the revival of the spirituality of the Ukrainian people, the rise of the authority of Orthodoxy, the establishment of the ideals of charity and interfaith harmony.
On Jan. 6, the Patriarchal Church of St. George in Istanbul hosted a tomos handover ceremony.
On Dec. 15, 2018, the Unification Council elected the metropolitan of Pereyaslavl and Bila Tserkva, Epiphanios (Serhiy Dumenko), as the head of the Orthodox Church of Ukraine.
