Ukrainian President Petro Poroshenko stresses the need to increase the presence of the warships of the North Atlantic Alliance in the Black Sea given Russia’s aggressive actions in the Black Sea and the Sea of Azov and the seizure of Ukrainian ships and seamen. He said this in an interview to an American news channel according to his Press Office.
“We must increase the presence of NATO ships in the Black Sea,” Poroshenko said.
At the same time, he noted that “…after the illegal annexation of Crimea, the balance of strength in the Black Sea was completely destroyed.”
“Putin uses Crimea to deploy missiles there, and the number of naval forces of the Russian Federation has been increased there. This creates an extremely dangerous situation and destabilizes the region,” he said. He did not exclude further possible aggressive actions of Russia in the Black Sea.
“As it was with the attack on Ukrainian military boats,” Poroshenko added. He was referring to the incident on November 25, 2018 when Russian forces attacked three Ukrainian vessels in international water near the Kerch Strait. The vessels were seized and the 24 captured sailors are currently in detention in Moscow.
“That is why the presence of NATO ships will be a factor of stabilization,”he said.
