Poroshenko Signs Language Law

The law was approved earlier this week by Parliament

President of Ukraine Petro Poroshenko has signed the law “On Ensuring the Functioning of the Ukrainian language as a State language.”

The signing ceremony was shared on the Facebook page of Petro Poroshenko. It was held in presence of the Chairman of Verkhovna Rada, Andriy Parubiy, other members of Ukrainian Parliament and civil society representatives.

“Today is May 15. On this day, as the President of Ukraine, Petro Poroshenko, I bear a great honor and the unique opportunity to sign the aw “On Ensuring the Functioning of the Ukrainian language as a State language.” I endorse by my signature the carefully balanced language law,” Poroshenko said.

The correspondent draft regulation was approved by the total vote of 278 members of Parliament. However, opposition politicians from the “Opposition Block” party registered draft proposals on cancellation of the newly signed law.

Andriy Parubiy immediately signed the law, after Parliament had denounced the opposition draft resolutions, which had blocked his signing.
