At least 116 candidates have already submitted their applications for a competition to select polar explorers for the 24th Ukrainian Antarctic expedition, which will take place next year, the press service of the Ministry of Education and Science reports.
More than 20 percent of the applicants are women.
“According to the results of only the first month, this year, we already have a record number of applications, because of an open competition for the team selection for Vernadsky Station, which was announced for the first time. Unfortunately, for many years, it was a closed men’s club, because although it was a secret, there was a ban on women in the expedition. At the moment, we do not make any gender restrictions on possible expedition participants,” said Evgen Dykyj, the acting head of the National Antarctic Scientific Center of Ukraine.
He said that candidates who fulfill the physical, psychological and professional criteria will be selected.
The 24th expedition will have 12 people: seven scientists, three engineers and technical personnel, and one doctor and chef each.
The requirements for each position, working conditions, pay, as well as the stages of the competition can be viewed here.
Seventeen candidates, 10 men and seven women, have applied for the scientist position so far.
The competition began on Oct. 27 and will last until Nov. 30.
