Ukrainian journalist Roman Sushchenko, who was illegally convicted in the Russian Federation, has been brought to a maximum security penal colony in Kirov region.

“Father was conveyed to the Federal State Institution ‘Correctional Colony -11’ of the Federal Penitentiary Service of the Russian Federation in Kirov region (Kirovo-Chepetsk town, Utrobino village). The Embassy of Ukraine in Moscow received this information from the Federal Penitentiary Service of the Russian Federation,” daughter of the imprisoned journalist, Yulia Sushchenko, told Ukrinform.

According to her, more detailed information will be available after a consul or a lawyer’s visit to her father.

The colony is located approximately a thousand kilometers from Moscow.

The Ukrinform Paris-based correspondent was illegally detained in Moscow in September 2016 where he was on a private trip.

In October of that year he was charged with “espionage.” Russia’s FSB claimed that Sushchenko is a member of the Main Intelligence Directorate of the Ukrainian Defense Ministry. The latter denied this allegation.

On June 4, of this year the Moscow City Court sentenced Sushchenko to 12 years in a high-security penal colony. The Supreme Court of Russia upheld the verdict on Sep. 12.

The information was confirmed by Sushchenko’s lawyer, Mark Feygin, on his Facebook page this morning.
