Sondland to Testify in Trump Impeachment Investigation
David Holmes, a political counselor at the U.S. Embassy in Kyiv testified on Nov. 15, said that on July 26 he had overheard a call between Trump and Sondland discussing their Ukraine strategy. Shortly after, Sondland took part in a UATV interview where he discussed the special mandate President Trump had given him to work closely with Ukraine
American Ambassador to the European Union Gordon Sondland is scheduled to testify on Wednesday (Nov. 20) before the House Judiciary Committee and it remains to be seen how his testimony will be compared to other recent testimonies from U.S. Ambassador to Ukraine Marie Yavanovich and acting Ambassador to Ukraine William Taylor.
In the ongoing impeachment investigation, both Taylor and Yovanovitch testified that U.S. President Donald Trump created a diplomatic side channel with Ukrainian officials that undermined the usual procedures and protocols of the U.S. State Department.
One of the key allegations of the impeachment hearings is that Trump withheld $391 million of military aid that the U.S. Congress had designated for Ukraine in order to leverage it against the newly-elected Ukrainian presidential administration in Kyiv to investigate political rival and potential Democratic presidential candidate, Joe Biden.
A call on July 25 between Trump and Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky has been in the spotlight as Democrats have accused Trump of pressuring Zelensky into a “quid pro quo” – that is in order for the military aid to reach Ukraine, the Zelensky administration would have to publicly announce an investigation into Biden and his son, Hunter Biden who worked for Ukrainian oil and gas company, Burisma. There has been no substantiation to claims of wrongdoing by the Bidens.
