Statement of Ukrainian Ministry of Foreign Affairs Regarding Venezuela Crisis
The return of democratic governance depends on Guaido and other political leaders in the country
Ukraine recognizes Juan Guaido as the head of the only democratically elected body of the power of Venezuela – the National Assembly, as well as the leader of the democratic opposition, the spokesperson of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Ukraine Kateryna Zelenko said in a statement on Monday.
According to the statement, the return of democratic governance depends on Guaido and other political leaders in the country.
Ukraine called to do everything possible to prevent the use of force in resolving the political crisis and to counteract the humanitarian problems and suffering of the people of Venezuela.
According to Reuters, Major European nations joined the United States on Monday, February 4, in recognizing Guaido as Venezuela’s legitimate head of state as a separate regional bloc met in Canada to pressure socialist President Nicolas Maduro.
On January 24, the day after the leader of the Venezuelan opposition declared himself as an interim president, Minister of Foreign Affairs of Ukraine Pavlo Klimkin wrote on Twitter that Ukraine supports Juan Guaido as a President of the National Assembly.
Current President Nicolas Maduro was re-elected in May 2018. Most of the countries of the West and Latin America did not recognize the elections. Later, the National Assembly of Venezuela recognized Nicolas Maduro as a usurper.
