People gathered to read the works of Ukrainian writer Taras Shevchenko at the Odesan park bearing his name. Participants of the Tuesday event not only read poems but also played the bandura – a national instrument.
The event was to celebrate the anniversary of the writer’s reburial in Kaniv, Cherkasy Region.
Fulfilling Shevchenko’s wish, expressed in his poem ‘Zapovit” (Testament), to be buried in Ukraine, on April 26, 1861, his friends, dug out and arranged his coffin to be transferred from Smolensk Cemetary in Petersburg to the Chernecha Hora near Kaniv.
On May 22nd, 1861, Shevchenko was laid to rest according to his will.
