Ukraine to Build Two Power Units of Khmelnitsky Nuclear Power Plant
The move would move Ukraine closer to energy independence
Ukrainian President Petro Poroshenko issued a decree to support the development of nuclear energy and increase the level of security in its use, his Press Office reports.
According to the document, Poroshenko instructed the Cabinet of Ministers of Ukraine to immediately make a bill on placement, design and construction of power units of the Khmelnitsky Nuclear Power Plant in accordance with the established procedure for consideration by the Ukrainian Parliament.
In addition, the government is instructed to take measures aimed at the comprehensive support and implementation of the pilot project “Power Bridge Ukraine-European Union”, including the work with the participation of the National Commission that carries out state regulation in the fields of energy and utilities.
The government ix expected to promote the introduction of modern technologies with high reliability and safety at nuclear power plants and ensure the necessary consultations with the European Union and the Energy Community Secretariat on the project.
In addition, the decree recognizes the need to ensure effective independence of a state body that regulates nuclear and radiation safety and strengthens its institutional and financial capacity.
