Today, on Dec. 5, when the world celebrates International Volunteer Day, Ukraine looks toward its strong community of volunteers.
The Revolution of Dignity and the Russian aggression on the East of Ukraine triggered the Ukrainian volunteer community to become a brilliant example of Ukrainian unity and self-organization, Ukrainian President Petro Poroshenko wrote.
“In these difficult for Ukraine times, the volunteers’ community of Ukraine surprised the whole world with its devotion, incredible courage, and unbreakable patriotism. Understanding their degree of responsibility for the fate of the state and its future, volunteers sacrificed their time and efforts to help the Ukrainian army to rise from ruins. These people became a reliable backing for the soldiers who defended the territorial integrity and independence of Ukraine,” he wrote on the presidential website :
Volunteers continue helping to resolve the most acute problems of the military, veterans, and people displaced from the temporarily-occupied territories of Donetsk, Luhansk, and Crimea, defending the sacred right to a decent life in a democratic state, Poroshenko said.
“Thanks to all the volunteers for their moral values, and unique virtues, for active civic stance and a sincere desire to establish European values in Ukraine,” he wrote.
