The Ukrainian Parliament approved presidential bill №0206 “On the termination of the Treaty on Friendship, Cooperation, and Partnership between Ukraine and the Russian Federation.
Two-hundred-seventy-seven Ukrainian MPs voted for the bill. The bill states that the Treaty of Friendship with the Russian Federation will be suspended starting from April 1, 2019.
“The recent acts of Russian aggression caused significant violations of most of the rules of the Treaty. Ukraine systematically emphasizes this in diplomatic correspondence with the Russian Federation,” the explanatory note to the approved bill reads.
The Treaty on Friendship, Cooperation, and Partnership between Ukraine and the Russian Federation was approved on May 31, 1997, and became legitimate on April 1, 1999. The Russian Federation has already many times over violated the terms of the treaty – some of the most grievous violations being the illegal annexation of Crimea and its hybrid war in Donbas.
