Pandemic, trade, and “Big construction” – Volodymyr Zelenskyy talked with Xi Jinping
President of Ukraine Volodymyr Zelenskyy and Chairman of the People’s Republic of China Xi Jinping discussed issues of combating the challenges posed by the COVID-19 pandemic. Zelenskyy thanked the President of the People’s Republic of China for the supply of vaccines against coronavirus. On July 13, the heads of state had a telephone conversation, UA reports citing the press service of the Office of the President of Ukraine.
“China is Ukraine’s trade and economic partner. And we are interested in the full realization of the potential of bilateral cooperation, primarily in the areas of trade and large infrastructure projects” – President of Ukraine noted.
Zelenskyy noted the importance of participation of Chinese investors in the implementation of a number of projects for the development of infrastructure of seaports, the construction and modernization of roads, the development of railways and urban infrastructure and municipal services. During the conversation, they confirmed their interest in increasing Ukrainian exports to China and expanding cooperation in processing of Ukrainian agricultural products.
Xi Jinping noted the importance of the Big Construction project and expressed China’s readiness to cooperate in this direction. In addition, the parties paid attention to the potential of cooperation in the sphere of trade and the possibility of increasing its volumes. Volodymyr Zelenskyy expressed hope that Ukraine can become a “bridge to Europe” for Chinese business.
The heads of state also agreed to conclude a visa-free agreement between Ukraine and China.
“Volodymyr Zelenskyy confirmed the invariability of Ukraine’s position on the issue of a united China. The President of the People’s Republic of China, in turn, stressed that China respects the way of independence chosen by the Ukrainian people, supports the sovereignty and territorial integrity of Ukraine,” the President’s Office concluded.
Earlier, Ukraine and China agreed to cooperate in the construction of infrastructure.
