Joint pressure on Russia by the United States and the European Union helped to reduce the possibility of escalation near the Ukrainian borders and in the temporarily occupied territories of Ukraine. However, the risk of aggravation still remains. This was stated by President Volodymyr Zelensky in an interview with the German “Frankfurter Allgemeine Zeitung”, UATV reports.

“When Europe and the United States started to put pressure on Russia – we called for this – through this joint pressure, the likelihood of an escalation decreased. About 3,500 military men left Crimea. All the rest remain in place – all equipment is 90% in place. Therefore, my vision is that escalation is possible at any time until the end of September, exactly until September 12-16. We know that there will be West-2021 exercises. Therefore, I think that the situation is very dangerous“, – Volodymyr Zelenskyy said.

According to estimates, at different times along the Russian-Ukrainian border there were from 50 to 80 thousand Russian troops, and on the territory of the occupied Crimea – about 33,000–35,000. About 30,000-35,000 military men and about 3,000 career Russian officers stay in the temporarily uncontrolled territories of Eastern Ukraine.

Earlier, NATO Secretary General Jens Stoltenberg noted that the number of Russian troops on the borders with Ukraine is not decreasing.
