Ukraine stops flights to Belarus – Shmyhal
From midnight of May 26, Ukraine stops air traffic with Belarus. This decision was made on May 25, during an extraordinary meeting of the Cabinet of Ministers. UATV with reference to Prime Minister of Ukraine Denis Shmyhal reported this.
The government instructed the Ministry of Infrastructure, the State Aviation Service and the State Enterprise “Ukraerorukh” to take the necessary measures for this.
In addition, Ukrainian airlines and aircraft will be prohibited from flying in the airspace of the Republic of Belarus. The State Border Service also received an order to stop the registration of passengers traveling from Belarus or to Belarus at the customs checkpoints of airports.
“The situation with the forced landing of the Ryanair aircraft in Minsk is a violation of the Convention on International Civil Aviation. The decision of our government is aimed at ensuring the safety of flights and passengers”, – Shmyhal emphasized.
This decision was prompted by the detention on May 23 in Minsk of the co-founder of the opposition Telegram channel NEXTA Roman Protasevich. He was detained at the airport after an emergency landing of a Ryanair passenger plane flying from Athens to Vilnius.
The Ukrainian Foreign Ministry called this act another attack on freedom of speech. A number of international leaders have already reacted to the arrest of Protasevich, and the international human rights organization Amnesty International called such actions an act of air piracy.
