Ukraine’s Banana Consumption Up 14 Percent
Ukraine's banana consumption has been growing for five years straight
In the first eight months of 2019, Ukraine imported 14 percent more bananas than last year, the ЕastFruit information platform stated in a report.
That’s 181,100 tons of bananas worth a total of $102.3 million.
“These figures are a record high for at least the last five years,” the EastFruit report reads.
Banana imports have been on the rise for the last five years, the report says.
“This situation is due to many factors. Firstly, bananas are no longer a novelty and exotic fruit for Ukrainian consumers. Today, the culture of consumption of this fruit in our country is already at a sufficiently high level,” Director for Development of the Ukrainian Fruit and Vegetable Association Kateryna Zvereva said.
However, according to the analysis, an increase in the price of bananas in the world and in Ukraine is possible in the near future.
The last few weeks have seen a significant rise in the price of these fruits. The main reason for the rise is the spread of TR4 (Tropical Race, 4) disease on banana plantations in Ecuador, which is the leader in banana exports, having 24 percent of world exports.
