Ukrainian Orthodox Church Gathered for The First Holy Synod

The Holy Synod of the Ukrainian Orthodox Church of Ukraine recently gathered for the first time in Kyiv. The meeting was held behind closed doors in Saint Sofia's Cathedral

“In the 18th century, this room was the church of the Metropolitan’s house. Nowadays it is open during exhibitions. But this time its doors were closed. At this table, the 12 top church hierarchs held the first Synod of the Ukrainian Orthodox Church,” UATV reporter Olha Mykhailyuk says.

The Archbishop of Chernihiv Evstratiy Zoria said that meeting should have been held between 13 of the top church hierarchy. But one of the participants could not come due to health problems. They will work on the formation of the Ukrainian Orthodox Church for one year. Then they will be replaced with the clergy of lower ranks to make the process more democratic. Discussion of the local church of Ukraine lasted for six hours.

“The church titles of all the hierarchs were changed. As in connection with the unification process the titles of some of them as well as the names of the dioceses, which they led, completely coincided. His Holiness Patriarch Filaret, as the Patriarch of Kyiv and All of Rus, led the parishes of Kyiv until the Unification Synod. He will continue to lead the parishes and monasteries of the city of Kyiv, with the exception of the St. Michael’s Golden-Domed Monastery – which will be led by the Metropolitan Cathedral of Kyiv and all Ukraine, His Holiest Epiphanius,” the Archbishop of Chernihiv and Nizhyn Yevstratiy says.

Heads of synodal institutions were also appointed. Management of external church relations will be handled by Metropolitan Epiphanius himself. Management on the issue of mercy and social work and military clergy also received leaders. In addition, a new head of the Kyiv Theological Academy was appointed at the synod. Its leader was Metropolitan Epiphanius before being appointed Head of the Ukrainian Orthodox Church. The next synod will meet in a month.
