Ukrainian political prisoner, Oleksandr Kolchenko, turned 29 yesterday, Nov. 26, wrote President Petro Poroshenko on Facebook.
This is his fifth birthday in a Russian prison.
Poroshenko said that Ukraine is continuing to fight for Kolchenko’s release.
Kolchenko is a pro-Ukrainian activist who was detained by Russian security forces in Simferopol in May 2014 soon after Ukrainian filmmaker Oleh Sentsov and two other Ukrainian Crimeans, Gennady Afanasyev and Oleksiy Chirniy. He has been convicted of terrorism, a charge that human rights organizations claim is politically motivated.
The court sentenced Kolchenko to 10 years in prison.
Kolchenko declared a hunger strike on May 31 in solidarity with Sentsov. He stopped his strike seven days later after his health seriously deteriorated.
