UWC Calls on Russia to Release Remaining Ukrainian Political Prisoners
On Saturday (Sep. 7) Ukraine and Russia exchanged 35 prisoners each
The Ukrainian World Congress (UWC) welcomed the return of Ukrainian political prisoners and sailors illegally convicted in Russia and called on the international community to demand the Russian Federation immediately release all remaining Ukrainian political prisoners.
“We welcome the release of the illegally jailed Ukrainian citizens and sailors. We congratulate President Zelensky for his successful efforts in securing the release and for his commitment to free the many remaining Ukrainian political prisoners who remain illegally incarcerated in Russian jails,” UWC President Paul M. Grod stated.
The Ukrainian World Congress said that Ukraine paid a high price for the freedom of its citizens as “many of those turned over to Russia today are perpetrators in Russia’s war against Ukraine and are responsible for war crimes and crimes against humanity.”
“We call on the international community to bring these criminals to justice,” the statement said.
The Ukrainian World Congress also called on the international community to “demand the Russian government immediately release all remaining Ukrainian political prisoners illegally jailed in Russian prisons and immediately implement sanctions against Russian officials responsible for these deplorable violations of inalienable human rights.”
On Satu)rday (Sep. 7, Ukraine and Russia exchanged 35 prisoners each. The list included eleven Ukrainian political prisoners illegally convicted in Russia and 24 Ukrainian sailors who were captured near the Kerch Strait in late November 2018.
